21st CENTURY FOUNDATION

Mission Statement:

To represent and serve all fund raising groups and activities supporting the Ipswich Public School System.

Encourage community involvement and active participation in any efforts making the Ipswich Public School System one of the finest in the area.

History:

The Ipswich 21st Century Education Foundation was established in 1995 to advance the mission of the Ipswich Public Schools by developing a strong base of philanthropic support for the school system.

The Foundation works to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward private contributions from individuals, businesses, groups and organizations that value public education. The Foundation recognizes the limitations of public funding and strives to fulfill unmet needs.

Successes:

  • Capital Campaign which funded needs in the new Middle/High School unmet by the allotted budget including:
    •  IPAC, weight room,
    • Tennis courts and athletic facility.
    • Landscaping and more

(over $550,000 raised in total)

  • Ipswich Performing Arts Center - Seat Naming Campaign (still ongoing at $99 per seat plaque
  • IPAC Fly loft completion (gift of nearly $100,000)
  • Carolyn Davis Endowment Fund – Initiated by the partnership of the Winthrop School Council, Winthrop FRIES and the 21st Century Foundation to provide teachers, district wide, the opportunity to participate in professional development programs thus assuring the continued high quality and enthusiasm our teaching staff brings to the classroom.

District:

Ipswich Citizens for Education (ICE):
www.ipswichschools.org/District/dis_res_ice.html

The Ipswich Citizens for Education (ICE) Fund is one of several organizations falling under the Ipswich 21st Century Education Foundation. The Foundation serves as the fiscal agent for the ICE Fund.

The mission of ICE is to enhance educational excellence in the Ipswich Public Schools by raising funds to support academic and co-curricular programs and educational resources and materials not provided for in the school budget. The ICE Fund board members work in partnership with school principals to identify the greatest areas of need.

History
In 2003 after dramatic budget cuts, many parents wondered how the Ipswich Public Schools could possibly continue to provide the educational programming the children of Ipswich deserve. With dramatically inadequate public dollars a call went out to the parent community from various organizations, including the newly formed ICE Fund, to provide badly needed financial support. The ICE Fund received more than $23,000 during 2003/2004. Since then, ICE has sent an
annual appeal letter to parents seeking contributions. To date, ICE (including several foundation and corporate grants) has raised over $135,700 for all Ipswich Public Schools. These dollars have been used to fund classroom tools such as scientific calculators, chemistry modeling kits, laptop computers, digital microscopes, dissolved oxygen meters, GPS receivers, digital cameras, and
numerous classroom textbooks; a reading literacy initiative in the elementary schools; professional development for teachers and staff; and after-school programs such as Student Leadership Council, homework club, and MCAS tutoring.

Recent Update
In May 2008, the citizens of Ipswich passed a proposition 2 ½ override. The additional $1.49 million annually for the schools will stabilize and restore teacher and staff positions, services, programs, libraries, textbooks, clubs, and activities. Because of the successful override, ICE did NOT send the annual appeal letter to parents in the fall of 2008. However, ICE will continue to operate under the umbrella of the Ipswich 21st Century Education Foundation and will work
closely with the Foundation board and school principals to monitor and assess unmet academic and co-curricular needs, and to raise funds as needed.

Donations
If you would like to make a donation to ICE, please mail to ICE, P.O. Box 786, Ipswich,MA 01938. Remember, donations can be earmarked for a specific school and/or purpose.
